The Abbey came into existance in 2003 when it rebranded and altered it's name from the Abbey National, which used to be one of the biggest building societies in the UK until changing to a bank in the nineties. Then in 2004 it was purchased and became part of the Santander Banking Group.
Santander Banking Group is a Spanish owned bank that has now established a sizeable foothold in the UK banking industry. Not only has it purchased the Abbey, but also the Alliance and Leicester, the Bradford and Bingley and Cahoot.
